What is Masdar City?

Masdar City is a planned community in Abu Dhabi that combines homes, offices, research institutions and a business free zone. According to Wikipedia it was initiated in 2006 and covers 6 km2. Construction began in February 2008, and the first six buildings were occupied in October 2010. Masdar City's own site says it is a subsidiary of Mubadala Investment Company.

The same site describes Masdar City Square as a cluster of seven commercial buildings with a gross floor area of 50,000 square metres. It also lists food, retail, parks and education alongside the free zone.

Which organisations and clusters are in the free zone?

The free zone is organised into clusters, and energy, life sciences and mobility are named most often. The examples below come from Masdar City's websites and Wikipedia; Tooba Web has no connection with any of them.

The free zone says several authorities oversee its framework, and the one that matters depends on your activity. It also says that, through a partnership, companies can opt to be governed by ADGM's common law framework, and it publishes 2026 editions of its licensing, company registration and employment regulations.
