Why Does Google Ads Get Clicks but No Conversions?

Clicks with no enquiries have two possible explanations: the leads are happening but not being recorded, or the visitors are the wrong people or meet a weak page. Work through them in a fixed order and you stop guessing.

Short answer

Google Ads gets clicks but no conversions either because conversions are not being measured correctly or because the traffic, landing page or speed is failing real visitors. Check tracking first, then search terms, location settings, the landing page and page speed, in that order, changing one thing at a time.

Is the problem measurement or real performance?

A conversions problem is either a measurement fault, where enquiries arrive but Google Ads does not record them, or a real performance fault, where visitors click and leave without enquiring. The two need opposite fixes, so separate them before changing anything else.

A quick test settles most cases. Submit your own contact form and tap your own WhatsApp button from a phone, then see whether the action appears in the conversion report within the reporting delay. Also ask whoever answers enquiries whether leads have really dried up or whether the account simply shows zero.

If real enquiries are arriving that the account does not show, fix tracking and stop. Optimising an account on false zeros teaches the bidding system the wrong lesson and can make results worse.

In what order should you diagnose the problem?

The sensible diagnosis order runs from the cheapest, most mechanical checks to the most expensive ones. This table gives the sequence, the question each step answers and the evidence to look at.

StepQuestionWhere to look
1. TrackingAre form and WhatsApp actions recorded?Conversion actions, a live test, tag diagnostics
2. Search termsWhich queries are really triggering ads?Search terms report
3. LocationAre the people reached in the right places?Location settings and location report
4. Message matchDoes the ad promise what the page delivers?Ad text next to landing page
5. Landing pageIs the next step obvious on a phone?Page on a real mobile device
6. SpeedDoes the page load before people leave?PageSpeed Insights, field data
7. Offer and follow-upIs the offer competitive and are leads answered?Sales team, response times

How do form and WhatsApp tracking go wrong?

Form and WhatsApp tracking fail most often because the conversion is counted on the wrong event, or is not counted at all. A tag that fires when a page loads, rather than when a form is successfully sent, inflates numbers; a tag that never fires hides real leads.

Check these points:

  • The form conversion fires on the thank-you state or successful submission, not on the button click alone.
  • A WhatsApp button click is recorded as its own conversion action, labelled so you can tell it from form leads.
  • Phone-number taps on mobile are tracked if calls matter to you.
  • The same enquiry is not counted twice through two overlapping tags.
  • Cookie or consent settings are not silently blocking the tag for every visitor.

A WhatsApp click is a signal of intent, not a confirmed lead. Count it, but also ask the team how many clicks became real conversations, and treat that ratio as part of your reporting.

What do search terms reveal about wasted clicks?

The search terms report lists the actual queries that triggered your ads, and it is usually where clicks without conversions are explained. Broad keywords can match job seekers, students, researchers and people looking for something you do not sell.

Review the last few weeks of terms and sort them by cost. Look for three patterns: queries that signal no buying intent such as free, jobs or definitions; queries for services you do not offer; and queries in a language or location you do not serve. Add the clearly irrelevant ones as negative keywords, and consider tightening match types where broad matching drifts.

Do this weekly at first. A search term review is routine hygiene, not a one-off fix, because new irrelevant queries keep appearing.

Could the location setting be sending the wrong people?

Location setting is a common hidden cause because the default option reaches more than people physically in your area. Google's default, Presence or interest, also reaches people who have shown interest in a place through searches or browsing, wherever they are.

For a business that serves only people in a defined part of the UAE, that default can bring curious searchers from abroad. Google describes the alternative, Presence, as reaching only people who are likely to be located in, or regularly in, your targeted areas. Check the location report to see where clicks came from, and decide deliberately which option fits your service.

Also check the targeted areas themselves. A radius or emirate that is far wider than your delivery area wastes budget on people you cannot serve.

Is the landing page or its speed losing the visitor?

A landing page loses visitors when the next step is unclear, the page does not match the ad, or it loads slowly on a mobile connection. Most paid clicks in the UAE arrive on phones, so test there rather than on a large screen.

  • Does the headline repeat the promise made in the ad?
  • Is there one clear action, with the form or WhatsApp button visible without scrolling?
  • Are the form fields only those you truly need?
  • Do trust details such as address, licence information where relevant, and real contact numbers appear?
  • Does the main content appear quickly, with no jumping layout?

Test speed with PageSpeed Insights and compare lab results with field data where available. Our technical SEO checklist explains the loading and stability measures. If you want an outside view, Google Ads management from Tooba Web includes landing-page review, delivered remotely from Istanbul.

What if leads arrive but never become customers?

Leads that never become customers are a quality problem, not a volume problem, and they come from the offer, the targeting or slow follow-up. Count them separately from the no-conversions case, because the fix is different.

Ask the team to tag each enquiry as genuine, unsuitable or unreachable for a few weeks. If many are unsuitable, tighten keywords and add qualifying wording to the ad and page. If many are unreachable, check that the form asks for a working number and that someone replies quickly, since a slow reply loses people who contacted several providers at once.

Frequently asked questions

How many clicks should I wait for before worrying?

There is no fixed number, because it depends on your conversion rate and sales cycle. Check tracking immediately regardless, since a broken tag wastes every click. After that, review the search terms report and landing page once you have a meaningful volume of clicks, rather than reacting to a handful of visits.

Why do I get calls but Google Ads shows zero conversions?

Calls from the ad itself, calls from the website and calls after a WhatsApp chat are recorded differently, and some are not recorded unless you set them up. Compare your call log with the conversion actions defined in the account, and add the missing actions rather than trusting the zero.

Can a slow website cause clicks without leads?

Yes. Visitors on mobile connections may leave before the page finishes loading, and a page where content shifts while loading frustrates taps. Measure with PageSpeed Insights and fix the largest causes, such as oversized images and heavy scripts, before spending more on clicks.

Should I pause the campaign while I investigate?

Pause or reduce spend if you suspect tracking is broken or the traffic is clearly irrelevant, because every extra click is paid for. If the problem is a landing page change that can be made quickly, you may keep a reduced budget running. Record what you changed and when.
