llms.txt Generator and Checker

Enter your key pages or paste sitemap XML to draft an llms.txt file, and check its format. It runs in your browser and fetches nothing.

Short answer

The llms.txt generator drafts a Markdown llms.txt file from the pages you type in or from sitemap XML you paste, then checks its format. It works entirely in your browser and fetches nothing from your site. llms.txt is a proposal: Google says Search does not use it, and we found no major AI provider confirming it for ranking or retrieval.

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a proposed plain-text Markdown file, placed at /llms.txt on a website, that gives AI tools a short, curated overview of the site. Jeremy Howard proposed it in September 2024. The proposal itself calls it a proposal, not a formal standard.

Optional sectionBy convention## Optional, for pages that can be skipped

Does llms.txt help rankings or AI answers?

There is no proof that it does. Google's AI optimization guide says you do not need machine-readable files, AI text files, markup or Markdown to appear in Google Search, and that Search itself does not use them. Making one for other services is fine, but it will not change Search visibility.

Chrome's Lighthouse has an experimental Agentic Browsing audit that checks for the file and calls it an emerging convention. That concerns browser agents, not rankings. At the time of writing we have not found a statement from a major AI provider confirming that it uses llms.txt to rank or retrieve pages.

So treat it as a low-cost, optional extra that may help some tools and developers, never as an SEO fix or a promise of AI citations.

How do I build the file with this tool?

  1. Enter your site name, address and a one-sentence summary that says who you are, what you do and where.
  2. List your key pages, one per line, as Title | URL | short description. Start a line with ## to add a section.
  3. Alternatively, open your sitemap.xml in a browser tab, copy the XML and paste it in. The tool takes up to your chosen number of pages and moves blog-style paths under Optional.
  4. Replace guessed titles with real ones and add descriptions.
  5. Read the format checks, then copy or download llms.txt.

Nothing is downloaded from your site: you provide the text, and the tool only formats it.

What should go in it, and what should stay out?

  • Include your main service pages, contact and booking page, about page and your most useful guides.
  • Describe honestly. Use the same facts as your website, with no superlatives or keyword stuffing.
  • Use Optional for secondary pages such as news and older articles.
  • Leave out private, noindex, duplicate and login pages.
  • Keep it short. A long list defeats the point of a curated overview.
  • Match the language of each page. Arabic pages can have Arabic titles and descriptions.

Where do I upload it, and how do I check it?

Upload it to the root of your domain so that it opens at https://yourdomain/llms.txt as plain text. Then open that address in a browser to confirm it loads without an error.

The checker on this page tests structure only: a single title, a summary line, at least one section, valid link lines, duplicates and non-secure links. It cannot tell whether the content is accurate or whether any AI tool will read it. For the basics that matter more, check that AI crawlers are not blocked in your robots.txt and that your pages are clear and marked up.

Frequently asked questions

Is llms.txt an official web standard?

No. llms.txt is a community proposal published at llmstxt.org, which describes it as open for input and not a ratified standard. Many documentation sites publish one, but publishing a file is different from search engines or AI assistants relying on it.

Will llms.txt improve my Google ranking?

No. Google's AI optimization guide says Google Search itself does not use llms.txt and that you need no special AI files or Markdown to appear in Search. Creating one for other services will not affect your Search visibility, either way.

Do ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude read llms.txt?

We have not found a public statement from a major AI provider confirming that its assistants read llms.txt to rank or retrieve pages. Some developer tools and agents may fetch it, but that is unproven for the big assistants. Treat any benefit as uncertain.

Why is it still worth making one?

It is cheap, takes minutes and forces you to say clearly who you are and which pages matter, which helps people as much as machines. Chrome's Lighthouse also checks for it in an experimental audit. Just do not expect a ranking or traffic change.

Why doesn't this tool fetch my sitemap for me?

Fetching another site needs a server request, and this tool is built to run entirely in your browser so that nothing you enter leaves it. Open your sitemap, copy the XML and paste it in. You can also list pages by hand.
